At this time, Microsoft has not updated their stance regarding the
print spooler service to mitigate the risk posed by the CVE-2021-34481
printing vulnerabilitynor have they communicated a timeline
for one.
IT has added additional network security protocols and made
changes internally as a workaround to provide print services and as of today, networkprint services have been restored.
In order to provide printing services this way, we need to ensure
we are not inviting unnecessary risk to the environment as the printing
vulnerability still exists. Lakeland is instead repositioning the security
systems to protect us as much as possible.
We would please ask all Lakeland College members to revisit our
cyber security awareness training at https://lakelandcollege.cyberaware.d-zone.ca/login and
complete or refresh yourself on cyber awareness training. This is the most
important step that our faculty and staff can do to help keep our network
protected.
In the days ahead, IT technicians will be contacting those
of you who had temporary printer setups to move your connections back to the
way they originally were.
It is important to note that Microsoft has not issued a fix
for this vulnerability.The measures we
are taking are to improve our security posture only.
We want to thank everybody for their patience while we worked
through this vulnerability and will continue to keep you updated as information
becomes available.
